Steal my heart, not my data: How to protect your online privacy on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, and maybe even the entire month of February, is a time to celebrate love and romance, but it can also be a time to attract cybercriminals who want to steal your personal data. Whether you are looking for a date online, sending e-cards to your loved ones, or shopping for gifts, you need to be careful about how you share your information and who you trust.

Here are some tips to help you protect your online privacy during the entire year, but especially during “Valentine’s Season”:

  • Use a reputable apps & websites. Avoid clicking on links or ads that promise to find your perfect “whatever” – especially those that say “free” or “no credit card”. They could lead you to phishing sites or malware downloads. Check the reviews and ratings of the app or website before you sign up and read the privacy policy and terms of service carefully.

  • Don’t overshare. Be cautious about what you post on your dating profile or social media accounts. Don’t reveal too much personal information, such as your full name, address, phone number, or financial details. Cybercriminals can use this information to impersonate you, hack your accounts, or steal your identity.
  • Verify before you trust. Don’t fall for online scams that prey on your emotions. If someone you met online asks you for money, gifts, or favors, be suspicious. They could be a catfisher or a scammer who wants to exploit you. Always verify the identity of the person you are talking to, and don’t send money or sensitive data to anyone you don’t know or trust.
  • Secure your devices and accounts. Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication for your online accounts. Update your software and apps regularly to fix any security vulnerabilities. Use a VPN (virtual private network) to encrypt your internet traffic and hide your online activity from prying eyes. Avoid using public Wi-Fi or shared computers to access your dating or shopping sites.
  • Have fun but be smart. Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to connect with someone special, but don’t let your guard down when it comes to your online security. Remember that not everyone online is who they claim to be, and that some people may have ulterior motives. Follow these tips to keep your data safe and enjoy a happy Valentine’s Day.
